2022-03-03: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) update
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is now on our coast. The OIE (also known as the World Organization for Animal Health) has confirmed that HPAI has been isolated on the west coast of the United States. A bald eagle that died in Vancouver, BC was positive for HPAI.
So, this is no longer some disease that is impacting wild birds and poultry in eastern Canada and the eastern and midsections of the United States. This devastating disease is now on the west coast. Those migratory birds will come down the Pacific Flyway and into California. If you haven’t already taken the NEEDED precautions, make sure now that all your birds are under SOLID cover. That is, they should not be wandering in the open. Keeping them in a pen with just a wire topic is also insufficient. Make sure that their pen is covered with a solid surface that will prevent any material from overflying wild birds, reaching your poultry.
