2026-11-05 - Alert - Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) hits California poultry

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection service of USDA confirms that 3 backyard flocks and one commercial operation tested positive for HPAI in 7 days.  On Oct. 28th a commercial egg layer operation in Stanislaus county broke with the disease.  On Oct. 29th, Nov. 2nd, and Nov. 3rd. backyard flocks in Sacramento and San Benito counties tested positive.

In a very short period, the disease entered both commercial and backyard flocks from the San Joaquin Valley to the Sacramento Valley and then to the central coast.   All poultry owners must be on guard.   Put to use all you have learned about biosecurity.
